Exciting time to be a web designer

There’s obviously been a ton of talk lately about the rapidly changing face of the web, from new technology supported by recent versions of web browsers, to the evolution of devices that are changing the way that people interact with the web altogether. Of course web technology and internet browsing have been evolving since day one and I’m sure the evolution will only continue to pick up speed. As web designers we are constantly forced to deal with and to design around seemingly infinite limitations. Now more than ever, it’s important for us to remember that more of those limitations are disappearing every day. Technology is quickly closing the artistic gap between web and the rest of the design world. When you consider just the typography, layout and interactive capabilities that have come around the corner recently with HTML5, CSS3, web fonts, etc. it seems like the web, more than ever before, truly is on the verge of something really exciting. Tools like these will allow us as web designers to make the considerations we need to make in our work without sacrificing design. It’s only a matter of time before this technology is mainstream enough for us to use in any way we see fit (I currently blame IE for the hold up). In my opinion, it’s a really exciting time to be a web designer.

Concepting, mood boards and art direction in the early phases
of the project

Project/Goal

The project was a reasonably straight-forward, complete re-design
with a decent amount of optimization over the original career site.
The goal was to make it easier not only to find jobs but to get
a sense of the company and it’s culture in the different office
locations around the world.

Results

In the first week:
- Page views increased by 312%
- Page views per visit increased by 174%
- User Visits increased by 59%
- Unique Visits increased by 45%
- Bounce rate decreased by 43%

This was a design I created for an acquisition landing page specifically for organic search customers looking for custom websites and or mobile websites. The product itself is a bundle package that includes a matching mobile version if you purchase a regular website.

This project was a website design for a freelance client. The site itself is an affiliate marketing site including a simple storefront website builder. Tool bars and complex interactions are always a ton of time- consuming fun. Vistaprint.com – Lite Redesign

Role:
Project initiator, designer, art director

Goal:
Modernize Vistaprint’s global website. Remove visual clutter, putting emphasis back
where it belongs, on the content and calls to action, improving the user experience.

Summary:
Changing the look of a website with with over 60,000 pages in 17 different languages
can be a bit of a challenge. Thankfully over the past few years our web team has worked
closely with our capabilities dev. team to componentize various pieces of the website:
buttons, containers, fly-outs and various other common elements that make up the site.
In this case we updated the look and feel of the site containers (remapping some and
reducing the number of variations), then we tackled the buttons, headers and other
bits and pieces of the pages.

Result:
A lite redesign, a much more modern look and feel, faster page load times, more emphasis
on the important stuff, all with minimal time and effort.

Vistaprint Mobile

Vistaprint hasn’t ventured too far into the mobile space, but as they’ve gotten their feet wet I’ve had the opportunity to tackle all of the design work for their mobile website. To the left are a few of screens I’ve designed. Unfortunately (and fortunately) since this was developed JQuery mobile hit the scene and changed the way we will approach any future mobile web projects.

These images were part of a proposal to do some “guerrilla” decorating around the office space at Vistaprint. The Web Team is typically seen as half left-brained due to the technical nature of our work. Well, we wanted to take those technical elements that are part of our everyday work, and apply them in much more creative way that people couldn’t miss. A way to generate some buzz for the team and to gain some visibility around the office.
